One of the first lettuce varieties to be declared "heirloom", this looseleaf variety is one the of fastest lettuces to mature in 45-60 days. Durable and resistant to heat, Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce makes a great salad and enhances just about any sandwich. Use a balanced, organic fertilizer to support healthy growth. By providing the right care and attention, you'll be able to enjoy a bountiful harvest of Heirloom Lettuce Black Seeded Simpson.

When and Where to Plant: Heirloom Lettuce Black Seeded Simpson is best planted in cool weather. It's ideal to sow the seeds in early spring or late summer for a fall crop. Choose a location with well-drained soil and partial shade, especially in warmer climates, to prevent the lettuce from bolting (prematurely flowering).

Care: Ensure the soil is rich and well-draining. Adding compost can improve soil structure and fertility. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Lettuce prefers even moisture to prevent bitterness and bolting. Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to provide adequate space for growth. This helps avoid competition and overcrowding. Applying a layer of organic mulch helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and prevent weed growth.

Harvesting : You can start harvesting outer leaves when they reach a usable size, typically around 3-4 inches. To harvest, cut the leaves just above the soil level, allowing the center leaves to continue growing. Harvesting in the early morning or evening when the leaves are hydrated can help maintain their crispness and flavor.
